In Memoriam: Remembering Leon Tuey, BEd’64

In Memoriam: Remembering Leon Tuey, BEd’64

August 11, 2022

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Leon Tuey (BEd’64). Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Joan and their family.

Known as a legend of technical investing and a veteran market analyst, Leon began his career as an artist, and after graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Education, went on to become a high school art teacher. In the 1970s, he changed course joining Nesbitt Thomson Ltd. in Montreal as a technical analyst, and this is where the legend began.

He spent the next decade tracking markets in Toronto before returning to Vancouver in 1990 to launch his own independent advisory firm. Leon’s love of teaching and sharing knowledge continued throughout his career. Fund managers in Europe, Asia and North America often reached out to him for advice, and even in retirement, he continued to be widely quoted.

Astute, disciplined and with a deep understanding of economics, Leon authored articles for numerous publications, including the Financial Post. He had a flair for humour and eye-catching headlines such as, “How’s the market doing? Fantastic, thank you!” And, in an article titled “Cash is Trash” he wrote an enduring piece of advice: “Waiting for ‘good news’ is like waiting for Godot!” In 2017, Leon was inducted into the Canadian Society of Technical Analysts Hall of Fame.

Leon and his wife both graduated from UBC with Bachelor of Education degrees and established bursaries and scholarships within the Faculty of Education in art education and early childhood education.

The impact of the Tuey’s generosity to the faculty and across UBC will be felt for many years to come. Leon Tuey was a beloved alum, philanthropist and community leader who leaves behind an incredible legacy.
